Music Throughout Park

PreK & Kindergarten

Beginning in PreK and Kindergarten, children participate in a wide range of musical activities that include listening, dancing and movement, instrumental work, singing, and performing.

Grades 1 to 3

In Grades 1 through 3, students build music literacy as they explore concepts of tone, harmony, and expression. They explore a wide range of musical traditions as they sing and respond to music through movement and percussion instruments.  In Grade 3, students begin recorder instruction, preparing them for the Grade 4 Ensembles experience.

Grades 4 & 5

Ongoing music instruction continues In Grades 4 and 5. Each student chooses from one of four year-long performance Ensembles: Band, Guitar, Chorus, or Strings. Through the Ensembles program, students become actively involved in the four basic areas of musical experience: creating, performing, listening, and history.

Grades 6 to 8

In Grades 6, 7, and 8, students may continue in their Ensembles, and also choose from an array of semester-long music electives. These include opportunities to explore and discover new ways to create and perform music while gaining greater understanding of its historical and cultural contexts.

Students who choose to continue in the Ensembles program further develop as confident performers who appreciate  the physical and mental discipline of musical performance. They also learn to be adept critical listeners as they support their peers and build community as polite audience members.
