Exploring Creativity
As students progress through their years at Park, they embark on self-discovery and artistic growth, paving the way for a future filled with creativity and expression. We believe in nurturing passion and investment in the artistic process, emphasizing skill development alongside creative expression to empower students to become confident, skilled, and creative individuals.
Exploring Self-Expression
Park students are encouraged to approach their work in the art studios with the knowledge that each step of the art-making process is defined by their own expressive choices. Students learn the techniques and tools necessary for artistic self-expression and appreciation, developing skills and concepts at increasing levels of complexity as they progress through the grades. Ongoing exposure to art history and contemporary working artists from a variety of cultures is an integral part of Art education at Park, while cross-curricular connections are emphasized.
Exploring Unpredictability
Students explore multiple solutions as they design a plan for a project, learning from mistakes and identifying the result that works best for them. This process helps develop the critical thinking skills and confidence to navigate the pathway to an unpredictable outcome.
Art At Park
PreK to Grade 2
PreK and Kindergarten students engage in art-making as part of their day-to-day program. Kindergarten students begin to experience the magic of the art room with small group visits. During this time, they collaborate on projects and lay the foundation for skills and material work they will expand on in art class as they get older. As students enter first grade, they attend art classes twice a week, where they are introduced to various art materials, including clay, painting, and drawing. By second grade, students are comfortable with the creative process and eager to dive deeper into their creations.
Grades 3 to 5
In Grades 3-5, students spend half the year in the woodshop and half the year in the art room, experiencing a wide range of media, including woodworking, collage, and life drawing. As they begin working in the wood shop, students are introduced to a variety of new skills and tools.
Grades 6 to 8
In Grades 6-8, students choose among elective courses that align with their interests and passions. Options include ceramics, sculpture, painting, figure drawing, woodworking, and more. Each student is required to take at least two classes in the Visual Arts discipline in Grades 6-8, ensuring a well-rounded experience. Those with a particular love for Visual Arts can opt for additional courses.
